Charles Larimer, the great great grandson of Jacob and Emeline Ritner, will discuss the many
strange events and stories he encountered while researching the Civil War letters between his
great great grandparents from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Larimer refers to the strangest of the strange
stories as “Ghost Stories”, and there are many of them.

Their letters are among the best, and possibly the best, set of correspondence between a Union
husband and wife during the American Civil War.

The book received widespread recognition – honors include being the cover story for the Chicago
Tribune Tempo section on August 31, 2000 and being the featured Civil War book by the Smithsonian
in October 2001.

The movie won honors in many film festivals. Bill Hoffmann of Newsmax called Love & Valor the
“most moving Civil War love story ever told” (broadcast on Newsmax cable channel in October 2015).

Larimer’s great great grandfather, Jacob Ritner, was a captain in the Union Army and saw action in
Missouri, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and the Carolina’s Campaign.
His great great grandmother, Emeline, stayed in Iowa, managed the family farm, and raised four small
children while Jacob was away.

Some the Love and Valor ghost stories Larimer will tell include:
· how Emeline’s letters found him (not the other way around) three days after he unexpectedly found the grave of Jacob and Emeline’s first child
· the ghost story of the escaped slave
· the ghost story of the Confederate citizen (the Ice Merchant of Savannah, Georgia)
· the ghost story of the “Baby With No Name” (a key chapter in this ghost story occurred when Larimer was riding his bike across Iowa, 170 miles from Mt. Pleasant)
· the Turkey Farm letters
· the ghost story of the modern day high school history teacher
· the connections to the poem “Evangeline” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1847 and May 2017), and
· the ghost story of the two governors of Iowa

Larimer will also discuss the brushes with famous people, including the man who was
the “co-grandfather” of the three grandchildren along with Abraham Lincoln (and who is
buried next to Emeline’s parents in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) and Jacob’s Aunt Mary Ritner who ran
the boarding house in Chambersburg, PA where the famous abolitionist John Brown lived in
1859 while planning his raid on Harpers Ferry.
